David A. Westover III, soldier and poet

March 27, 2016

David A. Westover III, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, after complications arising from his battle with cancer.

David was born July 6, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the eldest child of David A. Westover Jr. and Evelyn F. Westover. He was a proud alumni of Pennsylvania State University. His major and passion for the Russian language and literature led him to join the U.S. Army after college. David was branched and deployed in a military intelligence unit to Berlin, Germany, during the height of the Cold War.

The Cold War in Berlin left an impression on David and he expressed the tension and the tyranny of that time and place in his poetry: The ever looming presence of The Wall and the VoPos, the city as a trip wire, and the determination of the East-German people to reach freedom. David’s poetry and short stories won numerous awards and mentions in trade and national publications such as the Washington Post.

Before retirement David worked in the Rehoboth hotel industry.

David was a loving and supportive tutor for his nephews. His passion for teaching and rhetoric in history, the military, and politics passed along permanent and good values and principles.

David is survived by his mother, Evelyn of 99 years; his three sisters, Diane Casella, Roberta Bosch and Susan Huff; and five nephews Jason and Jeffrey Wannall, Christian and Todd Bosch, and Andrew Huff.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests, that donations be made to your preferred veterans charity of choice.
