Delaware Tech administrator Tammy Watkins receives regional award

November 30, 2016

Tammy Watkins, assistant vice president for marketing and public relations at Delaware Technical Community College, has been named the recipient of the 2016 Communicator of the Year Award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, District I. This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated special leadership and ability in the area of college marketing and communication. Watkins was honored at the District 1 conference awards luncheon Nov. 7.

The award recognizes Watkins' leadership of and contributions to Delaware Tech's marketing and public relations initiatives, as well as to the profession of community college communicators. Dr. Mark Brainard, college president, identified marketing as one of his top three priorities upon assuming the presidency in 2014. "Over the last two years, Tammy has led the development and implementation of a marketing and communication plan that connects us with defined target markets, enhances awareness of the institution and meets the college's recruitment goals,” said Brainard. “Effectively telling your story is one of the most important things an institution can do, and Tammy's efforts, along with the entire communication team, have enhanced understanding throughout the state of the excellence and value of a Delaware Tech education."

Watkins has worked for Delaware Tech since 1995. Prior to her current position, she served as marketing operations manager, department chair for business administration and instructional director for business administration at the Jack F. Owens Campus in Georgetown. She is a member of NCMPR's District 1 Executive Council and is a candidate for a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Delaware State University. She resides in Millsboro with her husband Eric and their son Connor.

Watkins will compete with six other community college communication professionals for the National Communicator of the Year Award, to be presented in March 2017.
