The Delaware Tech lacrosse squad downed Union County College 20-5 April 29, to win the NJCAA Region 19 Championship. It is the team’s first Region 19 title since 2010. They finish the season at 10-5.
Del Tech took 45 shots in the contest to Union’s 17. They also held a 36-14 advantage in ground balls.
Brandon Tice (Lake Forest) led the squad with six goals. Conor Christie (Milford) and Jack Dennis (Cape Henlopen) hit the twine four times each. Matthew Kracyla (Middletown) added three scores. Kevin Nyandemo (First State Military Academy), Matt Triola (Lake Forest) and Liam Bernat (Caesar Rodney) scored one each.
Dennis tallied three assists in the game. Tice, Christie, Nyandemo and Louis Savino (Middletown) each had a helper.
Del Tech started out like men on a mission, scoring the first eight goals of the game, and never looked back. They went into the halftime break up 11-1, then led 16-2 after three periods. They finished the game with a 20-5 victory and garnered the NJCAA Region 19 Championship.
Del Tech goalie Caleb Secrist (Lake Forest) made six saves in the cage. Brody McMillan (Milford) had three, while Tyler Cippola (Concord) stopped five Union shots.
“What we’ve had this year is incredible,” said head coach Sean Tischler. “Objectively, it was one of the best years in the program. I’m really proud of the hard work the guys put in to win this championship. I have two phenomenal coaches that work with me in Franc Cook and Dan Yearick. They are fantastic coaches.”
Christie broke the school record for points in a season with 88. The previous record was set by Ryan Gray in 2011 with 85. Christie also tied his own record for points in a game with 13 against Carroll. Christie, along with Tice, set the school record for goals in a game with nine. Christie has done it twice.
The team broke the record for goals in a season with 242. The previous record was 197, set in 2018.
The 2022 team set a new record for assists with 121. The previous record was 111, set in 2018.
Making the All-Region team were Dennis, Kracyla, Christie and Tice.
Dennis was named Region 19 Player of the Year, and he also garnered Region 19 Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Tischler was named Region 19 Coach of the Year.
“To me, this is the Team of the Year,” Tischler said with a smile.
