The Delmar field hockey team (17-1) has made it once again to the finals of the DIAA tournament, following a dominating 2-0 win over Polytech Nov. 15 at Rullo Stadium in Newark. They now hope the fifth time in the championship game is a charm as they face fourth-seeded Tower Hill (17-1) for the championship trophy Friday, Nov. 18, at Rullo.
Delmar senior Caitlyn Wink started off the scoring with an unassisted goal at just 1:28 of the first half. Then the Wildcats’ speed and defense took over the game. The stingy defense did not allow a single Panthers shot in the game, while the offense kept the ball in the Polytech defensive half of the field the majority of the 60-minute contest.
Wildcats sophomore Ashlyn Carr added an insurance goal at 22:05 of the second half.
Delmar had 11 penalty corners, while the Panthers had none.
“We didn’t play as well as we should’ve,” said midfielder Ashlyn Carr. “But we definitely made it to the championship game, and that’s all that matters, and we’re really excited.”
”We’re going to have to work very hard,” said Delmar coach Jodi Hollaman. “We’re excited to be there because obviously to have the chance to win you have to be there, and we’re there.”
But the coach wasn’t totally satisfied with their performance.
“We were not on,” Hollaman said. “Actually, I let the team have it at halftime. We were a little bit flat. We did come out and put the ball in the cage in the first two minutes, which we have done each of our postseason games. That’s a good thing, and I don’t want to take that away from them.”
The winning coach was quick to praise her opponents.
“Hats off to Polytech to be back here after losing eight seniors last year. Coach Lynn Richardson has done a great job,” she said.
Polytech ended its season at 12-4-1.
