Delmarva Power awarded for emergency restoration in Puerto Rico

June 30, 2018

Delmarva Power was recognized by Edison Electric Institute for its contributions to the unprecedented emergency power restoration mission in Puerto Rico following hurricanes Irma and Maria last September.

Delmarva Power, along with Exelon companies Atlantic City Electric, Baltimore Gas & Electric, ComEd, PECO and Pepco, was recognized with the special 2018 Emergency Assistance Awards for Puerto Rico Power Restoration. The awards were presented at EEI’s Annual Convention.

“We are proud of the important role our companies played in this historic effort to restore power for the people of Puerto Rico,” said Tyler Anthony, senior vice president and COO, Pepco Holdings, which includes Delmarva Power. “Our crews in Puerto Rico worked long, intense days in very challenging conditions and difficult terrain, going home to home to restore service, and we are honored to see EEI recognize their efforts.”

Over the course of nearly two months, 50 crew members from Delmarva Power, Atlantic City Electric and Pepco worked in challenging conditions in the Caguas region, one of the hardest-hit areas of Puerto Rico. Delmarva Power employees worked as part of a team of approximately 300 employees from across Exelon to restore power to more than 11,000 customers without power in Puerto Rico for more than six months. During the seven-week deployment, the entire Exelon team safely installed 376 poles, 267 transformers and more than 108 miles of power lines.

EEI's Emergency Response Awards recognize companies that put forth outstanding efforts to restore service to the public following a storm or natural disaster. The winners are chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process.

Earlier this year, EEI also recognized Delmarva Power with an Emergency Assistance Award for supporting power restoration efforts in areas of the southeast U.S. in response to Hurricane Irma. Over the years, Delmarva Power has sent hundreds of crews and support personnel to assist other energy companies across the country as part of mutual assistance networks. Just as Delmarva Power provides support, crews from across the U.S. have helped with restoration efforts in this region following severe storms.
