Several Dewey Beach Patrol members were honored at Dewey’s town council meeting July 13.
On Sept. 17, 2017, lifeguards were on patrol later than usual when they noticed an elderly man dive headfirst into the surf. When lifeguards removed the man from the water, they observed his heart had stopped beating.
Lifeguards performed two rounds of CPR on the man, and called the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company to assist and transport the man for medical treatment.
As part of their training, Dewey’s lifeguards are certified emergency first responders by the Delaware State Fire School and as health care providers by the American Heart Association. All lifeguards must complete routine training in CPR, standard first aid and c-spine injury stabilization.
