September 25, 2024

First responders and community helpers from across Sussex County joined together for the inaugural Dewey Beach Public Safety Day Sept. 21 at the Dewey Beach Lions Club.

Children enjoyed games and activities, adults picked up information and resources from a host of public agencies, and everyone took in a free barbecue lunch.

Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company firefighters used the jaws of life and other extraction tools to demonstrate how they can dismantle a vehicle to reach occupants inside.

Officers from Dewey Beach and Ocean View engaged in K-9 demonstrations in which their four-legged partners showed how they can find missing items and subdue a subject.

Police departments from Ocean View, Bethany Beach, South Bethany, Dagsboro, Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, Fenwick Island, Milton and Milford joined Delaware State Police, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Rehoboth Volunteer Fire Company, Sussex County EMS and the U.S. Coast Guard Indian River Inlet Detachment to meet with community members.

Envirotech, Delaware Department of Transportation, Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement and the Cape Henlopen Bookmobile were also on hand.

The event was sponsored by Dewey Business Partnership, Highway One, Dewey Beach Lions Club and Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce.
