Dewey Goes Pink tops $1 million in 11 years

Funds raised go directly to Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition
October 11, 2022

A crisp, sunny fall morning greeted thousands of Dewey Goes Pink participants Oct. 8, in what event co-founder Steve “Monty” Montgomery called a good old Dewey block party that has raised more than $1 million for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition since 2011.

Montgomery, co-owner of The Starboard and Bethany Blues, launched the event in 2011 with Adam Howard, owner of The Body Shop Fitness Center, after their own mothers battled the disease.

In its first 10 years, Dewey Goes Pink raised $963,000 for the coalition, and this year’s total, while there are still a few outstanding checks and invoices, will exceed $235,000, Montgomery said, putting the total amount raised for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition at $1.2 million.

“This event is as rewarding to our staff and all involved here at The Starboard as it is to the community and to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition,” Montgomery said. “With 4,000 people in attendance this year, the sea of pink was everywhere in Dewey this past Saturday.”

Montgomery said 2,000 people ran the 5K, 1,200 walkers completed the 1.5 miles non-competitive walk, and 200 party tickets were sold to those who just wanted to contribute and be a part of the festivities. After the race, participants enjoyed a spread of food provided by Bethany Blues and live music along Saulsbury Street.

“We are so pleased on how things went, and appreciative to all involved, from the participants, the volunteers, our own staff, and all the generous sponsors and contributors,” Montgomery said. “We'll have a full wrap of Dewey Goes Pink in the coming weeks and always take great pride in being fully transparent with this fundraising effort by publishing every single line item in the Cape Gazette with our annual thank you advertisement.”

Dewey Goes Pink is special to many people, Montgomery said. Participants ranging from serious runners to tutu-clad revelers get involved in different ways to honor their loved-ones and raise money to fight breast cancer.

The 12th annual Dewey Goes Pink is set for Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023.
