After three years in Rehoboth Beach Main Street’s conference room, a diorama of Rehoboth Beach in the 1920s has moved to city hall.

It’s formally called the Golden Age of Rehoboth Beach, The Railroad Era, and historian Paul Lovett has been working on the project for years, slowly adding miniature replicas of buildings that existed 100 years ago on Rehoboth Avenue. The display had to move because Main Street has grown and needs the conference room. Lovett and city officials reached an agreement earlier this year that allows the diorama to be stored in the atrium of city hall through April 30.

It’s unclear exactly what will happen to the diorama after the agreement with the city expires, but it appears it could end up at the Rehoboth Beach Museum.

During a city budget meeting Feb. 5, Heidi Nasstrom Evans, Rehoboth Beach Museum’s new director, said the museum board is in the process of working with Lovett on a memorandum of understanding to have the diorama at the museum. The details haven’t been figured out, but there’s a thought of having the diorama on display in the fall to attract visitors during a slower time of year, she said.

The museum board’s decision is expected in March, said Evans.
