After waiting in long lines and traveling significant distances, a trip to the DMV can sometimes be frustrating. With DMV On-The-Go, customers can cut their trip in half by visiting Delaware’s mobile DMV closer to home.
DMV On-The-Go, which launched in March 2022, is a mobile DMV with four fully functional workstations. The trailer can fulfill almost all DMV needs, except road exams, inspections and driver improvement and unassured motorist transactions.
Based on the previous DMV On-The-Go bus, which was decommissioned due to maintenance issues, the DMV On-The-Go trailer has served about 1,200 customers to obtain driver's licenses, IDs, handicapped placards and title work since launching last year.
The trailer has become convenient for those who live far away from Delaware’s regular brick-and-mortar DMVs. Instead of traveling long distances, customers can visit DMV On-The-Go just a few minutes from home.
“I think the public has really rallied and gotten behind it again because it gives them the opportunity to fill their DMV needs closer to home,” said Kathryn Beasley, chief of communications with the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles.
Beasley and her team carefully designed the trailer to assure fast and convenient service with ADA access. With locations spread throughout the state, the DMV has received positive customer feedback.
Lynda Ferris, 79, who recently moved to Lewes, visited DMV On-The-Go to get her new Delaware license.
“I think it’s great! It’s very convenient and close to where I live,” Ferris said.
Lewes is one of three locations customers can visit. DMV On-The-Go is at the Lewes Transit Center on Route 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., every Monday; in Seaford at the Big Lots Plaza on Norman Eskridge Highway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., every Thursday; and a New Castle County location is coming soon.
Although customers can view the wait times online for the original DMV locations, DMV On-The-Go ensures fast service with little wait times. By visiting the trailer, customers can conveniently dodge hitting the dreaded summer traffic.
“It's a great opportunity for the customers, especially for the older customers who don’t have the time to wait at the DMV,” said Yeni Martinez, who works for DMV On-The-Go.
Because the DMV On-The-Go trailer is now an option, customers who visit the trailer take wait times away from other DMV locations. As a result, customers receive faster service at all DMV locations.
In addition to its convenience, the trailer is always equipped with bilingual services. There is always at least one Spanish-speaking employee on the trailer ready to help those in need of translation.
