For his Eagle Scout project, Derek Sweet of Troop 903 planned and oversaw the work to renew the outdoor labyrinth at Christ Church Dover.
A winding path used for spiritual meditation, the labyrinth had fallen into disrepair. Some stones had sunk into the ground over time, making sections of the path almost invisible and rendering it unusable.
Sweet’s project entailed digging up the stones, and placing stone dust under and around them to make the path visible and prevent the stones from sinking back into the ground.
The renovations were completed over two weekends, with assistance from members of the church as well as fellow Scouts in Troop 903. An estimated 117 cumulative hours were put into the completion of this project, including the research, planning and labor phases. In addition, a new post was installed with a flyer box containing information about the labyrinth for visitors.
“I wanted to ensure that my Eagle Scout project was something that would have an impact that could last for generations to enjoy,” said Sweet.
Now the long-lasting path can be used for walking meditation by neighbors in the community as well as members of the church congregation.
