The early days of public education in Milton

September 3, 2019

With school starting back up for the 2019-20 year, we thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the former schools that have served our area. This 1926 photograph shows the Milton School in that year.

This public school may have been the successor to the Milton Academy, a private school that, according to one source, served the Milton area from 1822 through 1880. Another source says the Milton Academy was established in 1869. The academy was located at the corner of Chestnut and Coulter streets, and was one of 40 private academies that functioned in Delaware during that time.

New schools have been built in Milton through the years. Cape Henlopen School District is currently constructing a $30 million addition to Milton Elementary School, formerly Milton High School, on Federal Street.
