In partnership with the Zwaanendael Museum, the Lightship Overfalls will offer its second family program of the season at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 10. The program is free and open to children 5-12 years of age.
Levers, Pulleys and Wedges: Oh My! Simple Machines Making Work Easier on the Lightship Overfalls will cover simple machines and the impact they have on people’s daily lives and at sea. Children will learn about the five basic simple machines: wheel and axle, pulley, lever, inclined plane, and screw, and how they are used at home and on the lightship.
Retired educator and guest speaker Suzanne Ketchum will discuss the need for and use of simple machines on the Lightship Overfalls. Volunteers from the Zwaanendael Museum will demonstrate how a block and tackle works, and how simple machines such as pulleys were used on 18th-century ships.
The Lightship Overfalls is docked at Canalfront Park, 211 Front St., Lewes. For details, go to overfalls.org.
