Feeling carnivorous? Read on…

June 16, 2022

This week’s ramblings were inspired by the recent opening of the new Hammy’s Burgers & Shakes in Rehoboth. Hammy’s is part of the Ava’s Hospitality Group that includes Ava’s Pizzeria and Theo’s Steakhouse in downtown Rehoboth. Of course that got me thinking about steaks. To be fair, everything gets me thinking about steaks. If you’re from Philly, you might be thinking of an elongated sandwich stuffed with thin-cut beef grilled with onions and topped with bright orange cheese from a bright orange spray can. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. But today it’s all about actual steaks grilled over fire, or iron skillet-seared with butter and garlic and finished in a blazing hot oven. By the way, do give Theo’s ribeye a try. A value-added is that it includes owner Chris Agharabi’s amazing mashed potatoes.

Up in Midway, 1776 Steakhouse has been grillin’ ‘em up for more than 30 years. I like it when they wheel out the raw steaks so you can choose your cut. It’s like getting together with a tray full of old friends. One of my happy places is the 1776 bar, kibitzing with Johnny, Matt and Tattoo over a plate of black ravioli.

One of the hidden gems around town that dishes up a surprisingly good steak is Conch Island. Yup, you heard me right – that big (and newly relocated) rock ‘n’ roll club with the two huge bars is very proud of their steaks. Like live music? Check it out.

Chef Danio Somoza and his Coastline Restaurant Group are the prime movers behind the three Harvest Tide Steakhouses. One of the shining stars at Harvest Tide is that they often have Wagyu beef on the menu. This incredibly tender and flavorful product must be tasted to be believed. Harvest Tide is in Lewes, Bethany Beach and Washington, D.C.

The carnivorously inclined can also find themselves at the newly remodeled Bethany Blues in Lewes. The mesquite-grilled flatiron is topped with frizzled onions and accompanied by garlic mashers. Feeling more traditional? Check out their New York Strip. It’s crowned with a decadently delicious compound butter.

I’m allotted only so much ink, so this is but a quick overview. Get out there and treat yourself to something sorta expensive. Diamonds might be forever, but steaks are easier on your molars. Pass the A-1, please.
