Food Bank of Delaware accepting applications for May training classes
The Food Bank of Delaware recently announced that applications are currently being accepted for its free workforce training program. Classes are available in culinary arts and warehousing/logistics. They will begin Monday, May 12, at the Food Bank facilities in Newark and Milford. Classes meet Monday to Friday during daytime hours.
The Culinary School meets for 14 weeks. Under the direction of the Food Bank’s chef-instructors, students will learn basic and high-end kitchen skills, and participate in a two-week paid work experience. Participants also have the opportunity to earn ServSafe certification, an industry standard.
The Logistics, Operations General Warehousing and Inventory Control program, aka L.O.G.I.C., is a 14-week training that includes a two-week paid work experience. Led by the Food Bank’s warehouse instructors, students will learn how to use warehouse equipment like forklifts, end riders, pallet jacks and more. All participants have the opportunity to receive Certified Logistics Associate and Certified Logistics Technician credentials from the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council, and forklift and OSHA-10 certifications.
In addition to accelerated training programs needed to start new careers in just a few months, the Food Bank of Delaware also provides students with: job placement assistance, transportation (students are picked up or student drivers receive gas cards), uniforms and supplies, paid work experience and textbooks.
An open house will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, for interested students at the Food Bank sites in Newark and Milford.
“I love it here. It’s what I want to do. It’s enjoyable,” said Kelly, a student in the current culinary class. “It is filling in the blanks for me. Chef Tish is so knowledgeable, and she wants you to be the best you can be.”
To sign up for the open house or apply online for the free training program, interested individuals may visit fbd.org/delawarefoodworks and select culinary or warehousing/logistics.
