The 21st Georgetown Library 5K, contested June 14, was sinking-sun hot and began a sizzling weekend of four races with a total of 764 runners.
Mathew Klapak, 21, won the library race in 17:40. The Gordonsville, Va. resident also won the Rock ‘N Roll 5K June 15 at Hudson Fields outside Milton in 16:51.
Klapak ran for the Wasps of Emory & Henry College, where in cross country he ran 26:19 for 8K (about five miles). He was injured for the spring track season.
“I prefer the longer distances,” he said. “I am more fluid than fast.”
Brynn Crandell, 18, used the library race for an up-tempo run, crossing the line in 18:57. Crandell is heading to the University of Delaware, where she will run cross country and track.
“My summer training is in the early morning, mostly long runs,” she said. “So when I saw this Friday night race, I decided to jump in. It was no pressure and it was fun.”
Eric Nutto, 47, of Georgetown was male masters winner in 23:01. Nicole Fleming, 50, of Springfield, Mo., was female masters champion in 25:31.
