Friends of Lewes library seeks board interest by Oct. 16

September 20, 2024

Friends of the Lewes Public Library is seeking candidates from the greater Lewes area to serve for three-year appointments on the board of directors for the new term beginning this December.

Friends of the Lewes Public Library is a separate 501(c)(3) affiliate of contributing members who support the library. The organization focuses on raising funds for the library’s use, including purchasing lending materials such as books, sponsoring performances, enhancing children's programming and promoting the library in general. The Friends group is actively responsible for operating the Just Between Friends micro business located inside the library, and for conducting and managing periodic book sales throughout the year to provide 100% of the funds for lending material acquisition and support of free library programs.

Letters of interest will be accepted through Wednesday, Oct. 16. Letters should contain personal and professional history, what drives the desire to serve the community, and information about skills and experience relevant to supporting the Friends.

“The Lewes Public Library must raise nearly 50% of its operating budget each year, and the Friends of the Lewes Public Library plays an essential role in ensuring the library’s success,” said Candace Vessella, board president. “This is a fulfilling nonprofit leadership opportunity where members can learn, grow and impact their community while having a lot of fun.”

Board members meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month in the library. Ideal candidates are energetic and proactive individuals interested in helping to fulfill the Friends mission in the following areas: fundraising; marketing and advertising; communications in public print, broadcast media and social media; facilities management including shop activities as well as book donations and storage facility logistics; and community outreach. Board members are required to be or become members in good standing of the Friends, which includes a minimum $25 contribution to the organization.

To be considered, send letters of interest and resume by Oct. 16 via email to FLPL19958@gmail.com or via mail to President Candace Vessella, Friends of Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, DE 19958.
