Gary E. Thomas, retired educator

May 4, 2020

Gary E. Thomas, 71, of Seaford, formerly of Red Lion, Pa., was called home to the Lord Friday, March 20, 2020.  Gary was born at Milford Memorial Hospital March 10, 1949.

He grew up in Milton, graduated from his local high school and went on to attend Penn State University, graduating in 1971. He then taught social sciences at William Penn Senior High School in York, Pa., for more than 25 years.  During his tenure he received the Teacher of the Year Award several times, and often the number of students enrolled in his classes exceeded the number of chairs available. He was truly at home in front of a class, challenging young minds to expand their horizons. His second career began when he joined the team at New Behavioral Network in Delaware, first as a caseworker, then manager, and finally a director. He was a strong believer in behavioral therapies and was passionate about working with families and children in need.

Gary enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and frequently went swimming, camping and crabbing. He also liked to play cards, shoot pool and listen to music. Regardless of the activity, he always made you feel welcome. From the day he married Tina, his favorite thing to do was spend time with her around the house. They brought out the best in each other and those who were blessed to be around them.

Gary is preceded in death by several family members, including his loving wife, Tina Marie Thomas. He is survived by his two daughters, Kristie and Brea; and his son Anthony.  Gary is also survived by his granddaughters Lily and Gabrielle; grandsons Nicholas and Jake; and his great-granddaughter Teegan.

Due to the current restrictions on gatherings, the family has opted to postpone Gary’s memorial service until everyone can attend. Further details will be posted on the Hannigan, Short & Disharoon Funeral Home website.
