Georgetown man sentenced in fatal baseball attack

January 9, 2025
A homeless Georgetown man who beat another homeless man to death with a baseball bat was sentenced to 45 years in prison in December.

Officials said Kevin Shorter, 26, who had ongoing mental illness, went after another homeless man in 2022 because Shorter saw him as a threat. Shorter waited for Paul McCarter at the Royal Farms in Georgetown, and beat him with a metal baseball bat, officials said.

McCarter was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Christiana Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Shorter was sentenced to 45 years in prison for second-degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, the result of a guilty but mentally ill plea agreement.

"I am deeply grateful to our prosecutors and to the Delaware State Police for their work in this case,” said Attorney General Kathy Jennings in a press release. “Justice has been served, but I also know that closure is more elusive than justice. Our hearts are with the victim’s loved ones at this difficult time.”
