Herbert James Crowe, avid musician
Herbert James Crowe, 83, of Lewes passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at his residence. He was born May 24, 1936, in Wilmington, son of the late Herbert Crowe and Helen McLeod Crowe. He was also predeceased by his brother Robert Crowe.
For many years Herb worked as an environmental technician at the DuPont Experimental Station, retiring in 1992 after 35 years of service. He had served previously in the U.S. Navy as a submariner and was a member of American Legion Post 28, and a member of The Holland Club of the United States Submarine Veterans Mid-Atlantic Base.
As an avid musician who could play the accordion, bagpipes and banjo, he could often be found entertaining others by leading the String Along Banjo Band and co-founding the Back Bay Strummers. He especially enjoyed being outdoors and going fishing, as well as spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Kilpatrick Crowe; one son, Herbert A. Crowe (Ellie) of Wilmington; one daughter, Leslie DiStefano (Larry) of Hockessin; four grandchildren, Lindsey (Jerry), Andrew, Steven and Frank; one great-grandson, Jack; and a sister, Arlene Katris of Dedham, Mass.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 18, at 11 a.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow the services with full military honors at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
