Historian to present Brown v. Board of Education lecture Feb. 2

January 23, 2023

Historian Syl Woolford will present a live, online lecture at 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 2, discussing the fight to end racial segregation in American schools, presented by the Lewes Public Library.

The landmark Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka case, on which the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation in schools is unconstitutional, was a consolidation of cases from four different states and the District of Columbia. In this presentation, Woolford will discuss the details of each of the five cases, how their legal journeys and outcomes differed, and their significance to the time period and to American history.

Woolford is a member of the Delaware Heritage Commission, the Historical and Cultural Affairs Collections Committee, the Historic Preservation Fund, and the Wilmington University History Committee. He has been recognized by the Delaware State Education Association and the NAACP for his contribution to the preservation of African American history.
