Sparse playground equipment and the old, colorful block-style sign are all that remain of the former H.O. Brittingham Elementary School on Mulberry Street in Milton.
The Cape Henlopen school board voted unanimously Nov. 18 to approve a bid award to Kent Construction Co. for site work to remove the old parking area, and install two tennis courts and three multipurpose playing fields on the footprint of the old school, directly in front of the new HOB facility.
Kent Construction was the lowest bidder on the project, said Cape Director of Capital Projects Brian Bassett. The bid award of just over $1.39 million includes $1.18 million for main site work and $168,000 for tennis courts. Landscaping will cost an additional $48,000 and be completed at the end of the project, Bassett said.
The new HOB opened to students in September 2018. Milton Elementary students attended the old HOB during construction and renovation of the new Milton Elementary, which opened to students in September.
