Hot Henlopen hockey teams roll bagels

Four teams win by combined 27-0 score

The field hockey girls of the Henlopen Conference were handing out bagels Sept. 19 just a few days before the fall equinox, as four undefeated teams won by a combined 27-0.

Cape shut down previously unbeaten Polytech 5-0 Sept. 19 on the Bermuda pitch at Woodside.

Cape goals were all scored by seniors, including Grace Wiggins with two, and Lulu Rishko, Addy Basile and Hannah Maney with one each. 

Assist came from Wiggins with two, and Basile, Devon DeGregory and Atia Sabbagh with one apiece.  

Cape had one defensive save from backline defender Lina Frederick, who prevented the ball from crossing the goal line when the score was 0-0.

Cape put 20 shots on goal, with 19 penalty corners. 

The Delmar Wildcats clawed the Sussex Academy Seahawks 9-0 behind four goals from Jordan Hollamon. Delmar had a 35-1 advantage in shots on goal and dominated penalty corners 12-1. Sophomore Kacie Rawlings had 26 saves for the Seahawks.

The Smyrna Eagles rode roughshod over the Caesar Rodney Riders, winning 9-0 with an incredible 34-0 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Bree Moffitt led Smyrna with four goals, while her older sister senior Dru contributed two goals. 

Caesar Rodney goalies Abigail Peppard and Temperance Haupt combined for 22 saves. 

Milford improved to 4-0 with its third straight shutout, a 4-0 home win over Dover. Hannah Zimmerman had a hat trick for the Bucs, while Erin Dunlap had one goal. Goalie Maddie Stahl got the win in goal, making three saves.  

Push will quickly come to shove Tuesday, Sept. 26, as Smyrna will host Delmar. Milford will collide with Cape at Champions Stadium Thursday, Sept. 28. 

Cape plays Padua Friday, Sept. 22, at the Chase Fieldhouse complex in Wilmington. 

Corner cupboards - There are two undefeated teams in Division I field hockey, as both Smyrna and Milford are 4-0. Division II undefeated teams are Delmar at 5-0, followed by Caravel and Newark Charter at 4-0 and Tower Hill at 3-0.
