Howard O. Greene Jr., Senate sergeant at arms
The gregarious Howard O. Greene Jr., 73, known for providing sound counsel to United States senators and Hill staffers, passed away early Monday morning, Nov. 17, following a short illness. At the time of his death, Mr. Greene was surrounded by friends and family in Alexandria, Va.
In 1968, Mr. Greene left his beloved hometown of Lewes to work in the Senate. With a quick wit and charming personality, Mr. Greene excelled on Capitol Hill. He served in a variety of positions and ultimately was elected Senate Sergeant at Arms. After more than 28 years of service, Mr. Greene retired in 1996.
Mr. Greene was preceded in death by his father, Howard O. Greene Sr., and his mother, Elizabeth Greene both of Lewes. He is survived by his brother, Richard Greene and his wife Ginny of Newark; two nephews, Andrew and his wife Tina of Newark, and Jamie and his wife Lisa of Odessa; a niece, Laura Ferguson of Newark; three grandnephews, Tucker, Austin and Matthew; and a grand-niece, Savannah. Mr. Greene also considered the sons of his childhood friend, Everett “Reedy” Reed, his nephews: Beau Reed of Lewes and Derrick Reed of Lincoln, as survivors.
Funeral services are private. Friends are invited to join the family for a reception to reminisce and celebrate the life of Mr. Greene at the Lewes Yacht Club, 2701 Cedar Ave., Sunday, Nov. 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. Cigars optional.
