Huxtable's record on housing and the unhoused

August 9, 2024

I feel compelled to respond to the letter of Diana Robertson, who made false assumptions about Sen. Russ Huxtable in order to sway voters.

I know a lot about the unhoused, unlike most people who live in our very beautiful, affluent area. I have worked as a volunteer for shelters, Troop 7-Code Purple, Community Resource Center day room, Soup Kitchen at Epworth, Georgetown tent city, Food Basket at CRC and am a board member with Feeding the Flock at Conley's Church. I made a commitment to ensure hot meals for clients at CRC, and have created and coordinated that program for the last four years during the winter and summer months.

Huxtable, in his very short tenure, has been the prime sponsor on six bills leading to incentivizing and encouraging the building of affordable and workplace housing. Those bills were enacted into law on a bipartisan basis. Workplace housing does benefit the unhoused. Unhoused people do work. You will find them employed at the outlets, restaurants and many other service industry jobs. So that is one area where Huxtable's record shows his care and involvement.

But, no one person, even a senator, can change a systemic problem such as that affecting our unhoused population. This is the responsibility of every person to their fellow citizens. This takes a village. But the village isn't stepping up!

I was offended by Robertson's letter on so many levels. Does she provide any solutions or involvement? Not mentioned in her letter. The purpose of that letter was to slur the work of a very dedicated public servant in a highly toxic political climate.

It's time to work together, not criticize and promote untruths of a senator whose record is the opposite of what was alleged.
