Independent Press Award nods to two local authors’ novels
The Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild announced that the Independent Press Award program has recognized the work of two of its members, listing their novels as distinguished favorites.
“Becoming Nora” by Margaret Farrell Kirby was recognized in the Literary Fiction category, while “A Place to Hide” by David Salner was recognized in the General Fiction category.
The competition is judged by experts from different aspects of the book industry, including publishers, writers, editors, book cover designers and professional copywriters.
In 2022, the Independent Press Award had entries worldwide. Authors and publishers from countries including Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Jordan, New Zealand and Switzerland participated.
"It's crystal clear that independent publishing is pushing on every corner of the earth with great content. We are thrilled to be highlighting key titles representing global independent publishing," said Gabrielle Olczak, awards sponsor.
“I love that entries for this award came from around the globe and yet two – two! – of the novels chosen hail from our little neck of the woods,” said Maribeth Fischer, RBWG executive director. “Increasingly, I see in southern Delaware such a flourishing of the literary arts. Our writing community, and it truly is a community, has never been stronger. The novels being recognized couldn’t be more different in style, yet at the level of craft and story, both are compelling, character-driven reads.”
“Becoming Nora” explores how unexamined pasts and repressed emotions can simmer beneath the surface of a seemingly ordinary, happy marriage.
“A Place to Hide” probes a fugitive's mindset with suspense, humor and a unique moral vision. Set in 1923, it features a man on the run from a cruel Montana parole boss who arrives in New York City in search of a hideout and someone to trust. He finds both, working on the Holland Tunnel as a sandhog laborer with the first Jew he's ever known.
Both novels are available for purchase at Browseabout Books and on Amazon. “Becoming Nora” is also available at Bethany Books and other major retailers.
