James E. Travis Jr., devoted family man

January 31, 2022

James E. Travis Jr., 87,  of Angola, a special, gentle man, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, at home after a long illness which he courageously fought.

This special, devoted family man has passed on to his heavenly home to meet loved ones gone before.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 67 years, Eleanor; four children, James III and friend Linda, Kathleen and husband Edward (deceased), Patricia, and Paul and wife Concetta; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, including his special Little Chloe.

He served his family for 67 years, served in the U.S. Army in Korea for 18 months, and served his state for 35 years as a member of the Haverford Township (Pa.) Havertown Police Department, retiring with the rank of sergeant.

He and Eleanor met at his father’s sandwich shop in Darby, Pa., when she was was 16 and he was 20. When he said he was going into the service, she agreed to write to him. They married and started their family after his return from Korea.

His interests included Christian music, especially the hymn “Ten Thousand Years” by Ted Garrett. He was especially fond of holiday times with his family, and met many friends at the Cape Henlopen Senior Center and CHEER centers along the way.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Delaware Hospice and the EMTs from Lewes who attended to him during his illness, and appreciation for the kind assistance of neighbors Wayne and Linda Pusey, and George and Laurie Celia. A special thanks to Patty, who was right there for her father during this difficult time.

Services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Angola Beach and Estates Clubhouse near Lewes. Holloway Funeral Home in Berlin, Md., is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
