Jeffrey ‘Jeff’ Jackson, retired chemist

July 22, 2019

Jeffrey Andrew (Jeff) Jackson, 76, of Ocean View died peacefully Saturday, July 13, 2019, at Delaware Hospice in Milford. He was born in Washington, D.C., Dec. 16, 1942, son of the late Thomas S. Jackson, and the late Elizabeth (Jacobs) Jackson.

Jeff grew up in Kensington, Md., and graduated from Walter Johnson High School in 1960.  He was active in Boy Scouts and had fond memories of camping at Philmont, the scout camp in New Mexico, in addition to being on the swim team at Cedarbrook Swim Club.  He attended Lafayette College, Easton, Pa., where he was a member of Chi Phi fraternity and Army ROTC while earning a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1964.

He married shortly after college and briefly worked for Lehigh Portland Cement near Daytona, Fla.  He then proudly served his country from 1964-67 as an Army 2nd lieutenant at Aberdeen Proving Ground and Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., where he taught at the missile school.

After the Army, Jeff moved to Illinois and began his lifelong career as an engineer.  He first worked for General Foods in Kankakee, mostly in production. After a brief move to Milwaukee in 1977 for a job with Schlitz Brewing, Jeff moved to Crystal Lake, Ill., in 1978 to work for Abbott Labs.  While in Illinois Jeff was very involved in the Jaycees where he was president, vice president and state director.  It was also in Illinois that he perfected his speaking skills through Toastmasters, developed a lifelong love of golf, and enjoyed camping with family and friends at state parks.

In 1985 Jeff and family moved east to Newark for a position at American Hoescht. In 1992 he moved to Exton, Pa., where he was president of Moore Environmental, a small company that operated wastewater treatment plants in the area.  While in Exton he was very involved with the United Way. Being back east gave him the opportunity to spend as much time as possible at his beloved Bethany Beach.

It was in Bethany Beach that he had met his present wife, Winifred Glidden Warlow, and they were married in 1995. In 2000 they moved permanently to Bethany Beach. Although semi-retired, Jeff worked for Harry’s Bait and Tackle briefly and then for Harkins Concrete of Salisbury, Md.

Jeff was very involved with The Way Home, a ministry that helps men when they leave Sussex Correctional Institution, serving on the board for many years and spending many Monday evenings together with others, visiting the men in their transitional house. He was also active in St Martha’s Episcopal Church, the 38th Republican Club, the HOA boards of both Sussex Shores, Bethany Beach and Savannahs Landing, Ocean View, and the mentoring program at Clayton Elementary School. Additionally, he enjoyed Monday lunches with the ROMEOs – Retired Old Men Eating Out, and sitting on his screen porch with a good book, family and friends.

He and Wincy traveled extensively, mostly cruising, visiting the most northern town in Europe and the most southern town in South America along with many ports in between.

In addition to his parents, Jeff was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas P. Jackson. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Winifred Warlow (Glidden) Jackson; two children, Catherine Anzalone and her husband Tony of Garnet Valley, Pa., and his son Thomas H. Jackson of Middletown; two stepchildren, Rebecca Warlow of Columbia, Md., and Samuel Warlow and his wife Johnna Warlow of Pfafftown, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Sophia and Joseph Anzalone, Thomas, Mathew, and Julianne Jackson, Tyler, Conner, Brady, and Tiercy Warlow; and his first wife Jeanne Reside Carman.

A funeral service will be held at St. Martha’s Episcopal Church, 117 Maplewood Ave., Bethany Beach Monday, Aug. 5, at noon. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the mentoring program at Clayton Elementary School, 252 Clayton Ave., Frankford, DE 19945, or The Way Home, PO Box 1103, Georgetown, DE 19947.
