John C. Harrigan Sr., retired patrolman

August 12, 2021

John C. Harrigan Sr., 79, of Lewes, formerly of Philadelphia, Pa., passed away peacefully at home Sunday, Aug. 8, 2021.

John was born in Philadelphia,  the only child of Leroy Harrigan and Marie (Kenderash) Harrigan.  He worked with the Philadelphia Police Department as a patrolman for 26 years.  After he retired he moved to his daughter’s home in Lewes where he resided until his passing.

He thoroughly enjoyed his retirement; especially the time spent getting to be “poppy” to his family.  Poppy was a humble man and led his family with a quiet and gentle spirit.  He loved Saturday shopping with his daughter Ginny; he was always ready with the circulars in search of the best bargains.

Mr. Harrigan was an active member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. He attended Mass regularly until his health began to decline in the past few weeks.  John served as a head usher and was a member of Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Francis J. Desmond Council 13348.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his wife, Jane Audrey (Miller) Harrigan; a son, John C. Harrigan Jr.; and two grandsons, Andy Marker and Tyler Steven Marker.

He is survived by three children, Virginia “Ginny” Marker and husband Harry J. Jr., with whom he lived, Patrick A. “Pat” Harrigan and his fianceé Melissa, and Michael J. Harrigan and his companion Dawn; six grandchildren, Tiffany Marker, April Ibetson and husband Pete, Lisa Fister and husband RJ, Justin Harrigan, Taylor Harrigan and Michael Harrigan; and eight great-grandchildren, Serenity, Lela, AJ, Kylie, Cameron, Landen, Aubrey and Logan.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at noon, Saturday, Aug, 14, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St. Milton.  A time of visitation for family and friends will begin at 11 a.m.  Interment will immediately follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Milton.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory are welcome to the Fraternal Order of Police, 701 Marriott Drive, Nashville, TN 37214 or at www.fop.net/donate.

Online condolences are welcome for the family at www.shortfuneralservicesandcremation.com
