John L. Gilmour, World War II veteran

John L. Gilmour, 92, of Lewes passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.  He was born in Atlantic City, N.J., Oct. 13, 1927, son of the late Robert, a Scottish immigrant, and Elizabeth Gilmour.

John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II.  He worked as a bricklayer out of Local #1 in Wilmington for 20 years, then continued his career for 30 years as an estate manager at the Lamont duPont Copeland Estate in Mount Cuba.  John was loved by friends and family for his delightful personality and his wonderful sense of humor. He always had a quick quip, which he freely shared.  John enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing during his 30-year retirement.  Above all, John cherished time spent with those he held most dear.  He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Jean S. Gilmour.  He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sarah Gilmour; his daughters: Janet L. Gilmour and Mary Sipala (Mike); his adoring grandchildren: Marissa Sipala and Nick Sipala; his brothers: Jim Gilmour and Robert Gilmour (Jan); and his several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Saturday Feb. 1, at 11 a.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may visit beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Interment will take place Monday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m., at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle.
