Johnson, Marshall, Middleton lead Cape in New York City

The Cape girls’ indoor team competed last weekend at the mecca of track & field, the New Balance Games at the Armory in New York City. The meet attracted more than 100 teams and 4,500 athletes to the two-day carnival.  

Sophomore Taylor Johnson had the meet of her life, as she finished fourth in the 1,000 meters with a new school record time of 3:18.65. She returned the following day to finish sixth in the seeded section of the one-mile steeplechase, racing to a time of 6:22.5 in front of a packed house at the Armory. Alia Marshall won her section of the 300 meters and finished sixth in a school record of 41.65 in the field of 300 athletes. Cape’s 4-by-400 relay team of Ariyanna Dabney (1:06), Maren Buckaloo (1:11), Taylor Johnson (1:06) and Tia Jarvis (1:04) was second overall in the freshmen/sophomore race with a season best of 4:31.49. Marshall was sixth in the long jump in 16-feet-7-inches, while Jarvis was third in the freshman long jump in 15-feet-4 ½-inches. Ce’yra Middleton was third in the shot put in 37-feet-1 ½-inches, while teammate Mackenzie Parker was fourth in 34-feet-11 ¼-inches. 

Distance runner Elizabeth Melson was 11th in the freshmen 1,000 meters in 3:27.16, while Mia Nuebling was 12th in 3:27.31. All three Vikings won their section of the 200 meters, as Jarvis ran 28.81 for 16th, Dabney was 19th in 28.95 and Buckaloo was 24th in 29.48. Marshall was also 13th in the triple jump in 33-feet-1 ½-inches, while Chase Norton was 39th in 8.55 seconds in the 55-meter dash.

The Cape girls were set to compete Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Henlopen Conference Championships in Snow Hill, Md., before traveling to one of the nation’s largest meets, the Ocean Breeze Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y., to be held Sunday, Jan. 27. The DIAA State Championships will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, in Landover, Md.

Viking boys compete at Eastern Shore Invitational

The Cape boys traveled south to Princess Anne, Md., Jan. 19, to take part in the inaugural Eastern Shore Invitational. They came home with one individual champion and four second-place finishers to highlight the meet. Senior John DiStefano won the 3,200 meters in a season best of 10:34.25, while senior Dane Palmer grabbed two second-place finishes as he achieved a season best of 21-feet-even in the long jump and leaped 6-feet-even in the high jump. Junior Giovanni Bendfeldt was second in the pole vault in 10-feet-even, while the 4-by-200 relay team also grabbed second in a season best of 1:36.10. Sophomore hurdler Isaiah Fillyau was third in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.24, while the sprint medley team was also third in 3:56.50. Sophomore Daniel Adili-Khams was fourth in the 3,200 meters in 10:56.03, while senior Curtis Purnell was fourth in the long jump in a season best of 20-feet-8-inches.

The Cape boys were set to compete in the Henlopen Conference Championships Thursday, Jan. 24, in Snow Hill, Md., before traveling to the DIAA State Championships Saturday, Feb. 2, in Landover, Md.
