Kevin Maurice Rufus, loved music, dancing
Kevin Maurice Rufus, 32, born in Milford, passed away suddenly Monday, April 11, 2022, in his home in the Bronx, N.Y. Kevin was born June 6, 1989, to Katrina Rufus-Ross and Kevin Smith. Kevin attended Milford Senior High School.
Kevin went to New York to pursue his lifetime dream of becoming a singer. Kevin had a love for music like no other since he was a small child. He began performing at the Milford Boys & Girls Club. He also had a passion for dancing. He performed in many America’s Got Talent competitions hoping to kick into stardom. Kevin had a love for God. He attended anyone’s church who opened the door to him. He loved gospel, hip hop and R&B music. Kevin leaves a legacy in his many music videos and songs.
Kevin loved fiercely and deeply, and we take comfort in knowing that Kevin is now at peace. Anyone who knew Kevin was touched by his voice, kindness, humor and entertainment. Kevin always greeted people with a smile and was ready for the turn-up. He faced many life challenges but remained positive. We will all miss him more than words can say.
Kevin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wyoming Ross Sr. and Bessie Ross; his grandfather, Harrison Collick Jr.; his great-grandparents, Catherine J. Rufus (Wiley) and Dorothy Ross-Wilcox (James Ross Sr.); his uncles, Wyoming Ross Jr. and Walter S. Ross; and aunts, Kimberly Moss and Tilishia Tolson-Ross; and his godmother, Lakeyshia Williams-Chambers.
Kevin is survived by a loving family, his mother, Katrina Pierce (Dywane); his father, Kevin Smith (Angie Banks); his grandmother, Marie Smith; his aunts, Benita (Eric) Gassi, Charlene (Claude) Tolson, Pamela Smith, Teresa Nichols and Tonya Thomas; his uncles, Kevin (Michelle) Johnson, Larry D. Savage and William Fletcher; his sister, Kiara Rufus; and two brothers, Sonny Hampton and Naseem Hampton; his nephews, Sa’ir and O’brien; his one and only niece, Avaiya; numerous cousins and friends; and his godbrother, Darice Atkins. Kevin, we love you, and you will be missed.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, April 30, at New Birth Christian Center, Greenwood.
