Hundreds of players, along with their friends and families, will descend upon Rehoboth Beach this weekend for the Last Rites of Summer Beach Volleyball Tournament hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Volleyball organization. All ages and skill levels will participate during the weekend play.
Organizers have expressed some concern about the future direction of Hurricane Lee, which is slowly making its way up the East Coast. Forecasters predict the storm should stay away from the coast.
“Our September Mayor’s Cup tournaments always run the risk of seasonal storms, but so far things are looking good for the coming weekend,” said Ricardo Vera of Mid-Atlantic Volleybal.
The event will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17, with nets to be found up and down the beach all the way to the south end of the Boardwalk. Among the Sunday competitions will be the Chesapeake Wave Fall National Qualifier for boys and girls 14 and under and 16 and under. This national qualifier is part of USA Volleyball’s Beach Tour. Play will begin at 8 a.m.
The largest groups of pre-registrations are in women’s doubles Saturday, men’s doubles Saturday and co-ed doubles Sunday. There is no charge for spectators, but participants are urged to pre-register at mavolleyball.org/mayors-cup.
