September 15, 2017

Delaware's Latino community will present the 2017 Hispanic Community Heroes Award to former U.S. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Dr. Jill Biden at the Latin American Community Center 48th annual Grand Ball Saturday, Sept. 30, in Wilmington.

The Hispanic Community Heroes Award is given annually to individuals who have provided continued support to the Latino community. The center is honored to recognize the Bidens for the their work to promote and create equality in education, access to healthcare, social justice, immigration reform, and domestic violence prevention, and support many other causes that have benefited the Latino and wider communities.

Honorary 2017 Grand Ball chairs include the Hon. Jack Markell, former governor of Delaware, and Carla Markell; Michael S. Purzycki, mayor of Wilmington, and Bette Purzycki; and Fred Sears, former president and CEO of the Delaware Community Foundation, and JoAnn Sears.

More than 400 business, civic, and community leaders attend the annual grand ball to celebrate the center's work in building healthy children, families and community. The ball is the agency's main fundraiser for children and youth programs. Each year the grand ball raises money to provide scholarships for children from poor families to attend the early development center, after-school community learning center and summer day camp.
