Legacy Academy students learn by immersion at state capitol

December 23, 2023

Delaware Rep. Jeff Hilovsky, R-Long Neck, hosted students of Legacy Academy in Harbeson at the state capitol building in Dover Dec. 6.

Legacy students in grades one to eight had the privilege of touring the House chamber, sitting at the podium used by the speaker of the House, visiting the governor’s office, and interacting with legislative staff and elected officials. Students also observed the activities in the Senate chamber after a joint committee hearing of the House of Representatives Housing Committee and the Senate Committee on Housing and Land Use. Students were fascinated by the experience, and asked many engaging and thoughtful questions about the state legislative process. Questions ranged from, “When was the last time a governor’s veto was overridden?” to “What happens if you disagree on a bill?”

“It was an honor for Legacy Academy students, staff and families to be invited by Rep. Hilovsky, along with his wife Marsha, to visit the General Assembly,” said Karen Barbrow, Legacy head of school. “Legacy students were able to get a glimpse of our state government at work. Legacy prepares its students to become life-long learners, and this experience demonstrated and fueled their passion for knowledge and truth.”

Legacy Academy is the first classical Christian school in southern Sussex County, and Hilovsky has been a friend since its inaugural school year. In March, Hilovsky moderated Legacy’s first speech meet, a competition of student recitations. Legacy students are endowed with a rich, academically challenging education that encourages them to learn by experience. It was an invaluable opportunity for students to experience the content of their government and history courses coming to life.

Hilovsky said, “You are the future legislators and leaders of our state and community.”
