Lewes comes alive after dark for Hospitality Night

Annual event is a thank you from local merchants
December 8, 2023

Jim and Joella Schmidt and their dog Peachy strolled Second Street in Lewes to take in the sights and sounds of the Christmas season.

“The decorations, the beautiful shops; people are out having a good time,” said Joella.

The Schmidts joined hundreds people for Lewes Merchants’ Hospitality Night in the city’s commercial district Nov. 30.

Second Street was closed to accommodate the big holiday crowd.

Merchants on Second Street, Front Street and Savannah Road opened their doors for an evening of refreshments and fun.

“Hospitality Night is a big, huge thank you to all of our customers that have supported us throughout the entire year,” said Michelle Buckler, owner of Sand N Stones. “We celebrate them and just say thank you.”

“This is my first Hospitality Night,” said Heidi Lowe, who moved her gallery to Front Street in April. “It’s a great way to start the season.”

The Cape Henlopen High School jazz band and chorale set up at Second and Bank Streets to entertain the crowd with Christmas favorites.

Visitors could also explore history after dark in the Zwaanendael Museum and Cannonball House.

Santa was there, too, posing for pictures in his house.

Hospitality Night was a festive evening for everyone in downtown Lewes.
