October is Fire Prevention Month, and Lewes Fire Department is gearing up for three hot events.
The LFD Auxiliary has partnered with local restaurants for the Second Annual Thirst Extinguisher Weekend Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2.
Patrons who order signature drinks from participating restaurants will have a portion of the proceeds donated to the fire department. To date, Bethany Blues, Revelation Brewery at Hudson Fields, Sydney’s Restaurant and Lounge Crust & Craft, Matt’s Fish Camp, Grain on the Rocks, The Wheelhouse and Beach Time Distilling have generously agreed to participate.
Some of these establishments will also be participating in a thirst extinguisher throwdown to have their fire-prevention-themed cocktails judged by judged by by Bob Yesbek, curator of RehobothFoodie.com and co-owner of Eating Rehoboth, Dr. Michael Hurd, the "Life's a Beach" newspaper columnist from Coast Press and Delaware Wave, and Tiffany Patterson, the lead guide from EatingRehoboth.com restaurant tours. Drinks will be judged on the name’s relevance to the fire prevention theme, presentation, aroma, taste and originality. Last year’s winner, the Beach Time Distilling team, will once again be participating in the hope of retaining the Golden Fire Extinguisher trophy on its bar.
The Lewes Fire Department will host its third annual open house at Station 2 from 4:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, at 32198 Janice Road.
There will be children’s activities, equipment display, live fire and vehicle extrication demonstrations, a smoke house and a drone station. Kids can try on small-scale gear to really feel the weight of what it takes to be a firefighter. The LFD Auxiliary will have a decorate-and-eat, fire-themed sugar cookie station. Fat Vinny’s, Tipsy Flamingo, SmashMouth Burgers and DaNizza Pizza food trucks, as well as Revelation Craft Brewing, will be on site for dinner and drink purchases.
Children are invited to partake in a scavenger hunt. If they visit eight of the activities to have their passport stamped by a member, they will receive a State Farm prize, compliments of Jeanine O’Donnell, plus a Lewes Fire Department Challenge Coin. Sparky the Fire Dog will be available for high fives and photo opportunities throughout the night. There will also be raffles for items including men’s and women’s bikes, Lewes Fire Department memorabilia and the opportunity for four people to ride in a fire truck during the Lewes Christmas Parade. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Attendees 21 years and older can purchase a refillable beer mug for $10. Food trucks will be onsite.
