Becky Carney sent this page from the 1967 Lewes High School yearbook after seeing a column in the Cape Gazette about guns showing up at Delaware protests in late spring and early summer. The photo shows the members of that year’s Rifle Club, one of the school’s oldest clubs.
“Yes, we brought our guns to school on rifle club day. The shooting range was in the basement,” wrote Becky.
All of the club’s members had passed their hunter safety course and practiced to compete in shooting competitions. The yearbook description explained: “In a rifle shooting match, contestants shoot from the prone, kneeling and sitting or standing positions. They are scored for their accuracy after shooting a course, a specified number of shots taken at a certain range.”
Members of that year’s club included John Vincent, president; James Hastings, vice president; Alfreda Allen, secretary; Josh Bennett, treasurer; and Wendy Allen, Tim Peters, Virgil Bush, Robert Fisher, Tony Pedraza, David Kielbasa and Larry White. Also Kenny Ensminger, Jack Cunningham, John McCloskey, Fred Hall, Theodore Collick, Becky Hart, Larry Jones, Melvin Street, Ken Dunning, Bill Harmon, Jacob Holland and Wayne Chorman.
