Lewes High football goes undefeated in 1951

In the fall of 1951, the Lewes High School football team put together a 9-0 record to be the only undefeated team in Delaware. Practices started in late August under the direction of coaches Hanley and Georgiana. Lewes proved to be the best team in the state throughout the season, earning four shutouts and never allowing more than seven points in a game. Lewes outscored its opponents 181-32. Members of the team included Bob Short, Jim Brittingham, Duval Evans, Sonny Collings, Bill Burton, Sam Paynter, Bob Hall, Lynn Crisp, Page Melson, Bob Maedler, Douglas Melott, Larry Knapp, Tom Marshall, Hoppy Jackson, Carl Walls, Carlton Bailey, Dace Fitch, Jack Keye, Bob Martin, Larry Keiffer, Roy Smith and Douglas Scott. Chosen as the team captains were Tom Marshall and Larry Knapp. Selected to the all-state team were Sam Paynter and Jim Brittingham.
