Lewes Lights switch to flip on for the season Dec. 3

Homegrown holiday tradition seeks new volunteer co-chair
November 24, 2022

To help make spirits merry and bright, Lewes Lights is keeping it simple this year, focusing on the spirit of giving and spreading joy throughout the community.

Elves are concentrating on getting more homes and businesses east of Route 1 to decorate with lights as they celebrate the season, and register to be on the free Christmas lights driving tour map. Every illuminated home sparks neighboring homes to put up lights. Together, they make Lewes glow and add to the collective joy, which is bigger than competition. Awards have been eliminated this year.

For its official kickoff Saturday, Dec. 3, Lewes Lights will join the tree lighting in Zwaanendael Park after the Lewes Christmas Parade to turn on the giant light switch, instead of holding a separate event opening. The annual tour map will be unveiled online in early December, in time for the Christmas parade weekend.

Lewes Lights co-Chairs Debra Evalds and Christian Mullins founded the initiative in 2020 to bring cheer during the pandemic. Mullins announced he will be stepping down as co-chair after this year, so a new volunteer will be needed to fill that role and help Evalds and Tracey Zigman keep the effort energized for years to come.

A homegrown holiday tradition, Lewes Lights has zero funding, no paid staff, and doesn’t run ads. To volunteer or learn more, email Leweslights@gmail.com.

New for 2022 is a Lewes Lights wish list on the website that enables supporters to give the gift of decorations, lights and supplies.

To donate or register by Thursday, Dec, 1, to be included on the map, go to LewesLights.org.
