The Lewes Major League All-Stars moved to 3-0 in the District 3 tournament with a 3-2 win over previously unbeaten Georgetown July 16, at Millsboro’s WB Atkins Memorial Park.
The win secured Lewes a spot in the championship round against Milton, which has won four straight games following an opening-round loss to Lewes. Lewes needs one win to claim the championship, while Milton needs two. The first game is set for Thursday, July 18.
Georgetown drew first blood, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on a walk, two singles, a pop-up and a ground out fielder’s choice.
Lewes got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth when Andrew Mekulski and Lucca Tobias walked. Mekulski advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Jacoby Clark single.
Lewes added two more in the top of the fifth when Finn Gannon and Lucca Fazio walked, then both advanced on a wild pitch. Ayden Jester hit into a fielder’s choice to score Gannon. Mason Thompson hit into a double play, but it scored Jester. Grant Hershelman drove a single into center field to score Fazio and take the lead.
Hershelman, Clark and Tobias each had a hit in the game. Hershelman, Thompson and Clark were credited with RBIs.
Lucca Fazio went 5.2 innings on the rubber, giving up just three hits while striking out eight batters. Ben Pease came in from the bullpen to finish off the game.
“Lucca pitched a fantastic game,” said head coach Jerry Windish. “It was a total team win. Our defense was great and we ran the bases aggressively. It almost cost us a few times, but the boys played well. Georgetown played a great game. They did a lot of good things. I couldn’t be happier, and we’ve got one more to go.”
Lennon Kelly, Corbin Pettit and TJ Drejka garnered hits for the Georgetown squad.
