Lewes Public Art miniature sculptures available at Peninsula Gallery
Art is on the move in Lewes at George H.P. Smith Park and at the Peninsula Gallery.
In the green space behind Beebe Healthcare, the Lewes Public Art Committee recently placed an installation of kinetic sculptures by Baltimore artist Paul Daniel. Peninsula Gallery has four miniature pieces from Daniel available for purchase.
Unlike the larger-than-life models in the park, these works are between 1 and 2 feet tall and can be displayed inside or outside seasonally. Despite their smaller size, these studies also dance and spin with wind pressure, as seen with his outdoor exhibits.
Nature plays a part in Daniel’s work, as the final step in bringing each sculpture to life is a gust of wind that puts the piece into motion. Kinetic sculptural elements indicate the earth’s rotation and wind velocity, and mark time. Wind and sun affect each piece, drawing viewers into awareness of natural phenomena of movement, shadows and calm. His style combines industrial materials and scientific design with organic whimsy and pops of color.
Daniel creates compact models as prototypes for his oversized works. “Models have always been a part of the process, because it gives you an idea to see what you want to do on a larger scale,” he said.
