Maggie’s Mile attracted a nice crowd on a perfect Friday night Aug. 12 at Legends Stadium to raise money for the Maggie Browne Scholarship. Maggie, a friendly, effervescent person and a member of the Cape girls’ track team, lost her life last year in an ATV accident at the age of 16.
Monica Browne, Maggie’s mom, was on hand to soak in the love for her daughter and actually participate in one of the mile runs.
An emotional moment came when the Cape football squad presented a signed helmet from the 2022 team, handed to Monica by Joe Coveleski while surrounded by players. Coach Mike Frederick spoke to Monica afterward.
“Just the presentation of the helmet was a great moment and lets our kids know the power they have to reach out to others and make a difference,” Frederick said.
The last mile race of the night was the elite division, which saw Jake Bamforth, 25, beat Liam O’Donnell, 17, by three seconds, 4:36 to 4:39.
Katya Geyer, 14, ran 5:53 to win the women‘s elite race over Katie Kuhlman, 17, who ran 5:58.
