Mariner Middle students earn prizes in Human and Civil Rights Contest

May 17, 2022

Five Mariner Middle School students have been named winners in the 2022 Delaware State Education Association Human and Civil Rights Contest.

Each year, the contest accepts student submissions in writing, art and technology categories, and this year’s theme was Leaning Into Justice. Submissions were judged on relevance to the topic, creativity, accuracy, proofreading and organization. Art entries included photography, painting, computer-generated art, sculptures, drawing and more.

In the art category, seventh-graders Will Runde, Gadiel Lopez-Garcia and Anthony Amalfitano earned first, second and third place respectively. In the writing category, Moss Bucci took first place and Anderson Puac-Escalante took second place; both are in seventh grade.

“I’m very proud of all the students who participated in the contest,” said Jaclyn Hoffman, Mariner Middle School teacher. “They worked so hard on the submissions, so to have earned this recognition with the DSEA is a great accomplishment! Each piece was very impactful in their own way, and I hope they leave lasting impressions with those who have the opportunity to view the art and read the written pieces.”

The Human and Civil Rights Awards Ceremony will be hosted by DSEA Wednesday, May 18, at St. Andrew’s Church in Dover. To learn more about DSEA, go to dsea.org.
