Medical society names two to leadership positions

The Medical Society of Delaware recently named two people to leadership positions in the organization. Mark B. Thompson has joined the Medical Society of Delaware in the newly created position of external affairs officer. Maria Miller has been named manager of professional and public education for the Medical Society of Delaware.

Thompson comes to the society with nearly 20 years experience in health care marketing, public affairs, and community relations. He served as director of marketing and community relations for St. Francis Hospital, as director of public relations and community health for Beebe Medical Center, and recently as assistant vice president of communications and marketing at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. He has a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a master’s of health services administration from George Washington University.

Thompson will be responsible for establishing an effective community affairs strategy for MSD including media relations, and development and implementation of marketing campaigns, to include membership recruitment plans. He also will oversee community health outreach programs.

As manager of professional and public education for MSD, Miller will oversee the daily operations of the society’s nationally accredited Continuing Medical Education program for Delaware’s physicians. She is a graduate of Cabrini College.

Miller brings 16 years of experience working in medical education at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, most recently as a training coordinator for the Center of Excellence in Mental Health Treatment for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities. Prior to this, she was employed as a policy planner with the New Jersey Department of Education.

The Medical Society of Delaware is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Delaware physicians are required to obtain a minimum of 40 credits of CME during each two-year relicensure cycle. During 2010, the Medical Society of Delaware provided accreditation for activities attended by 6,141 physicians and 5,329 other healthcare professionals.
