Assistant principal excited to work in community
July 9, 2020

New Sussex Consortium Assistant Principal Michael Thompson is thrilled to be working in his own hometown.

“This is my community, and I want to give back to the community where I live,” said the Lewes resident, who noted his two youngest children attend Shields Elementary, and his oldest son is a rising seventh-grader at Beacon Middle.

Thompson joins the Cape district after 11 years in Indian River School DIstrict, most recently as assistant principal at Howard T. Ennis School, which offers services to county students ages 4 to 21 who have significant disabilities.

“Ennis is a very similar program,” Thompson said. “This was a good opportunity to continue what I had been doing. It was the right time for a new chapter.

Originally from Newark, Thompson is a graduate of Glasgow High. He spent his first eight years in the classroom in the Christina School District, where he said he helped develop the middle school curriculum.

Thompson earned his bachelor’s degree in education and his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Delaware State University, and completed a project-based, 900-hour training program for teachers interested in becoming administrators.

“I look forward to meeting the rest of the staff and students,” he said. “It’s great for students with the most needs to have a nice, new building with great technology.”
