Mike Simpler is best for local politics

October 15, 2024

Twelve years ago, I moved to Delaware, drawn by the peace and balanced, centrist approach of the people. Whether Republican or Democrat, most of us here in Sussex County lean center-right or center-left, creating a harmony that makes Delaware unique and attractive. Unfortunately, that harmony is now under threat.

With the retirement of Pete Schwartzkopf, who has represented the 14th District since 2002, a significant shift looms on the horizon. Schwartzkopf’s centrist approach has allowed our district to flourish. However, Claire Snyder-Hall, the Democratic candidate positioned to replace him, is presenting herself as a natural successor while promoting an extreme progressive agenda. If enacted, her plans would fundamentally alter Sussex County, starting with our 14th District.

Claire Snyder-Hall’s ties to the agenda of socialist leaders like Bernie Sanders (she was a Sanders delegate) suggest a clear intent to reshape Delaware’s political and business landscape. She will prioritize a progressive agenda over the needs of our community.

Broad issues like immigration, crime and punishment, and equity imbalance and rights are important, but they are better addressed at the federal level. Our representative for the 14th District should focus on the local issues that directly affect our daily quality of life. Sussex County is a hidden gem on the East Coast, known for its tranquil state parks, beautiful beaches and affordable living – qualities that have attracted many to our area.

A friend of mine in the construction industry mentioned that nearly every farm in the area is being slated for housing development. As our population grows, we must equally prioritize the infrastructure and services that support this expansion, such as roads and community services. For instance, try getting an appointment with a veterinarian for your new pet – most in the area are not accepting new clients.

This is where our local leaders need to focus, or Sussex County risks losing the qualities that make it such an attractive and livable place.

Claire's progressive, anti-capitalist and anti-business beliefs will have one inevitable outcome – businesses that can’t relocate will close, and those that can will seek refuge in pro-business states.

This is not a partisan issue; it’s about preserving what makes Delaware special. Fair-minded Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike have come together to support Mike Simpler, the Republican candidate. Mike has been a part of Sussex County his entire life – a dedicated father, husband and longtime member of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company. He has devoted decades of his time to this community and aims to continue Pete’s moderate, fair-minded governance.

We must unite to protect our community’s values and way of life. The extremes do not reflect who we are, and success lies in the middle, not in radical agendas. If we don’t take a stand now, we may soon find ourselves forced to leave Delaware, driven out by a political agenda that ignores the needs of our district.
