Milton 8-10 All-Stars fall to Lower Sussex

Team must win out; could face Lewes over the weekend
July 6, 2023

The District 3 8-10 All-Star tournament’s first pitch was thrown July 5, when Milton took on Lower Sussex in Roxana.

Facing a tough pitcher in Lower Sussex’s Cirio Sanchez, Milton was unable to get the offense going early. Sanchez’s efficient pitching was backed by disciplined at-bats and timely hitting from the Lower Sussex offense. Milton threatened in the fourth and fifth innings. Lower Sussex scored its 13th run in the bottom of the fifth to reach a 10-run lead, enough to claim victory.

Notable plays in the contest for Milton included a smooth scoop at shortstop by Henry Hill, a runner being thrown out by Addie Dean, Pierce Czepiel escaping a rundown, Dean getting to third following a pick-off attempt from the Lower Sussex catcher, and Addie’s brother Wyatt bravely taking two pitches for his team after getting his teeth pulled earlier in the day.

Milton’s coaches told players afterward to keep their heads up and focus on the task at hand. Suffering their first loss in the double-elimination tournament, Milton will take on Laurel, which lost Millsboro 7-6, in a July 6 game.  A victory could set up a showdown against Lewes Friday, July 7. Lewes would like to avoid the contest, as it would only come as a result of a loss against Georgetown July 6. If Lewes can pull off the victory against Georgetown, the team would earn a spot in the Saturday, July 8 semifinal.
