The Milton Historical Society welcomed a sellout crowd Sept. 27 at its Third Annual King Cole Cannery Celebrity Chef Cook-Off and Basket Raffle at the Milton Fire Hall.

Seven local chefs, including Mike Clampitt, Po’ Boys Creole Restaurant; Mary Gaffney, A Different Kitchen; Chris Parks, Lupo Italian Kitchen; Drew Boyle, Bethany Blues (Lewes); Vincent Modesto, The Butcher Block; Kevin Reading, Abbott's Grill and Nate Griffith, Gilligan's Restaurant and Bar, competed for a People's Choice award and a Critics’ Choice award.

Chefs prepared culinary creations featuring vegetables and fruits that would have been canned at the former King Cole Cannery in Milton, as well as chicken or beef from area producers Allen Harim and the Butcher Block.

Although the competition was stiff, Clampitt won the People’s Choice award for the second year in a row. Celebrity judges Bob Yesbek, Denise Clemons and Eban Brittingham found they faced a very difficult decision with the quality of all the entries.  At last, they compromised by selecting two Critics’ Choice winners - Griffith and Boyle.

The evening included desserts by King’s Ice Cream and Lavender Fields Farm, music by Jeff Evans, a basket raffle and silent auction. Proceeds from the event will support the Milton Historical Society and its programs, walking tours, lectures, exhibits and wide variety of educational programs for local children.
