I’m writing because I’m concerned about tax increases in Milton.
Eight years ago, we were lucky enough to buy property in Milton, and four years ago, our dreams came true when we retired in Milton.
For the past three years, the town has steadily raised taxes by large percentages, in most cases claiming, this is what the residents want.
This latest increase town council is about to pass will amount to a 70% tax increase in three years!
This last increase for me amounts to $367 per year. What concerns me is the older Miltonians who are on a smaller fixed income. I fear they may not be able to pay.
I attended the last budget meeting, and I agree with Stephen Mannoia, who wrote the letter “Milton tone deaf at budget meeting” in the Aug. 23 edition, who said he found town council to be tone deaf. The council concerned itself with smaller budget items and the possibility of shorting the volunteer organizations that work so diligently for the town.
This budget increase seems to be a fait accompli in the coming weeks. If town council insists on passing this budget as is, they should also issue a moratorium on hiring for the next three years to give the new construction in town time to come online in the budget. This move would show some empathy and understanding to the taxpayers who will be feeling the pain.
